Rose Spuhler- Checking your vitals: Wearable technology is changing the way we monitor health- Week 1&2 Reflection (article)- Class 1- Reflection Blog

In the article “Checking your vitals: Wearable technology is changing the way we monitor health” we read about how technology is changing the way we can view our health. A few years ago, to get an idea about how you were looking about your health, you had to go see a doctor. Now, there are various types of technology you can wear or simply turn on that can give you accurate information. Examples of these are the Health app on iPhones, apple watches, fit bits, and many more. All of these help people know how their health is looking on a daily basis. This shows how technology can have a positive affect on health. People can now see their blood pressure, heart rate, be told when to “get up and move around”, and so much more. Someone struggling with high blood pressure can watch their blood pressure throughout the day and also track things like how many steps they have taken, which has become a new and very popular fitness fab. Technology can be very beneficial to health, if we use it correctly, and these new “wearable technology” devices are for sure a step in the right direction for the positive link between health and technology!

Rose Spuhler- Adam Ruins Everything- Week 1&2 Reflection (video)- Class 1-Reflection Blog

In this video from “Adam Ruins Everything” we learn about how Facebook is taking over the lives of many people, and they may not even realize it. In the video it is stated that they download our information (and can even guess things like sexual orientation), sell it to ad companies which then post ads all over our Facebook of things we want to buy or see, then can analyze how likely we are to buy things after seeing the ad, and if they see we are very likely to buy they will flood our facebook with ads. This is a way that technology can benefit health. In the video we see a woman who has a gay cruise come up as one of her ads, and a coworker sees it and now knows private information about her. If private information gets into the wrong persons hand, it can have a very negative affect on a persons life and their mental health. Another example that shows how technology can be negative is when the man in the video likes a page about bacon. They then send him an ad for a fast food place and see he went to buy the food after seeing the ad. They then continue to send him ads about unhealthy fast food. This could cause someone to want to buy fast food way more often than they should. This would negatively affect a persons life because the more fast food we eat, the worse it is for our health. By seeing unhealthy ads pop up all over a facebook page, this can cause a person to choose to live an unhealthy lifestyle.
