Learning a new skill can be very confusing and frustrating at times. However, having the right resources to guide you along the way can turn it into a positive learning experience. For me, taking professional pictures is something I do not have much skill set in. I learned a lot in the basics of taking pictures and what to look for through articles and powerpoints which made the process much simpler.

For my online class on photograph, I took one from photzy.com called “Patterns in Photography”. This taught me how to photograph patterned objects and what to look for in the patterns. Photographing patterns can be difficult because it is hard to know which ones are good and will be able to be seen clearly in a photograph. I also learned there are different types of patterns we should look for. These include manmade patterns, nature patterns, broken patterns, and patterns we make ourselves. Some patterns, like ones found in nature, can be so simple but also come out very clearly and nice. The powerpoint also talks about having to use different angles when photographing patterns. Some angles may look better than others and may capture it much more clearly. This taught me a lot because having very little experience in higher quality photography I do not know what patterns to look for and how to make them look appealing. Now however, I have learned what to look for and how to get it so that the photograph comes out how I would want it to. Here are some screenshots from my lesson on the things I found most interesting and helpful:

For more help on gaining knowledge about photography I also read an article called “Ideas for Beginner Landscapers” by Selena ITC. This taught me about lighting for pictures and when is the best time to go outside and get a landscape picture. The belief is that during sunrise and sunset the lighting is best, however in this article it says that going out for an hour or so before sunrise and then staying a little after the sun rises will be the best light. It is the same for sunset, going out a little before and then staying a little extra creates the best lighting for pictures. These times are best for lighting because during midday you get a “yellow” tint to the pictures, however if you beat the light and when it is at its strongest, this can result in beautiful and clear pictures. I have never learned about lighting for photos and the best times to take them, so for me this article was very helpful because not only was what times were best stated, but also informed me on why other times are not ideal. We do not want yellow tinted pictures, we want clear and bright. I’ve always found landscape pictures catch my attention most, especially if it includes a nice sunrise or sunset. Learning when the best times for these pictures are can help me to grow my love for sunrises and sunsets into a new hobby for me.
