For this round of our projects, I will be evaluating the nturition apps “MyFitnessPal” and “Fooducate”. Both of these apps are for tracking calories, and give you a certain calorie target based on one’s fitness goals. While I am exploring these apps similarities, I will also be diving into how they are different and which app I personally like using better. Both of these apps are available for iPhone and Android users.

The pros of both of these apps is that you can track the calories you are eating a day, as well as certain vitamins and sodium levels etc. The apps also give health tips, healthy recipes, and other health information for free, which is a benefit of either of these apps because most apps make you pay for extra things like that. The apps also help you to stay on track if you are trying to gain/lose weight with the amount of calories you should be assuming everyday.
The cons is that I find when I use apps like these I focus on reaching my goal more than I focus on health. For example, if I need 600 calories to get to my goal I will be tempted to eat something which will give me many calories but not be healthy for me (sugary foods, fast food). Also, at the moment I am not trying to lose or gain weight, while you can still use the app to find out how many calories you need to maintain your weight, I find I use them less and am less compelled to want to track my calories if I have no specific goal. What was weird for me is that for both apps I put the same height and weight and stated that I wanted to maintain my weight, yet the calories were different on each app. MyFitnessPal set me at 2,160 calories per day and Fooducate set me at 1,880 calories per day, which is a decent difference in calories.

I am excited to use these over the next week and see which app I found to be easier to use and better for me. By looking at the apps I believe Fooducate will be a better fit for me because there are additional factors to it that MyFitnessPal does not include. Fooducate has a feature where you can add your emotions and hunger level when you add a food, and can also show you certain patterns and habits you tend to follow in your eating. This app even grades the healthiness of the food you log!
